I am coming to the same conclusion that the problem is not specifically
caused by the IMail 6.04 patch and it does fix the more major things.
I have changed the NIC to an Accton (DEC based) card on my dev system. The
problem still occurs at 255 IP addresses I have not gone through the
exhaustive process of finding out if the bounds of the problem have
changed. We have a couple of NT servers running with these NICs on IMail
4.0x with about 255 IP addresses so I know they are capable of this.
For anybody that has the problem, the current work around is stop the
smtpd32.exe process from the task manager by right clicking then "End
Process Tree" which kills it and all the associated tasks that it has
spawned.

Please do not take my earlier message as anything other than an attempt to
get more and clarify, information. The things you said before were just so
unusual, I had to make sure you really meant what you were saying! You must
know that people do make typos and are not all at the same level of
knowledge of IMail, in this forum.
Ok, now that you have confirmed these things, and I read your other
responses about using fewer IPs, I have more information to work with. What
I said it still true, but your system is not doing this, so that helps
define the problem. So, now we have to make it work the 'right' way or find
out why it won't.
IMail 6.04 does have some things changed that were to fix IP problems in W2K
(- Corrected a crash in SMTP32 on Win2K that occurs when the server has more
than 255 IPs installed). And I have heard of problems with some Intel 10/100
(not positive of exactly which ones) cards (or drivers, not sure yet and I
also see you asking this question a while back). So I suspect it is some
combination of OS (and/or SP), NIC (or its drivers) and IMail, that is
causing your situation.
Yes, if the SMTPD32 is still running, and you tried to start it, you
certainly might get the error you showed earlier! The thing to do here is to
stop the first instance, before attempting to start another. If it cannot be
stopped in IMail Administrator or the Services (or whatever W2k uses to do
this), then I would try the 'net stop smtpd32' command. If that does not
work, I'm out of options and ideas, except for a reboot.
Now, I see you are saying that this is happening on both a 6.04 and a 6.03
system (I'm assuming similiar hardware/software, ie NIC and OS/sp). So this
tells me the problem is not in the 6.04 patch. Ok, that is 1 thing
eliminated. Now we have to find the things these systems have in common that
are contributing to the trouble.
Since you do say that the number of IPs the system has, affects the problem,
I have to believe (because I have seen it before) the problem lies in the
NIC or driver. Yes, I know Intel stuff is good, but like everyone else, they
can have problems, too. I do not have any hard data to help, but it could be
worth the effort to at least try a different NIC and driver. I'm not saying
that it is not IMail, but in 4 years of supporting it, I have never heard of
a problem like this, that I can recall, that proved to be IMail.
Well I hope that is enough for you to investigate some more. Let us all know
things you find along the way. We can help you stay on the quickest way to a
solution.
PS, as you know, I and other Ipswitch employees, do not have to answer
questions here, any more than any person on the list. Ipswitch does not
