The thing I was missing was assigning the service to log on with the user
account not the SYSTEM account. I made the change it is working great. I
also use Proxy Faq. That is where I found most of the info. Maybe I missed
it, but I didn't see anything about using the user account to log on for the
service. I did this also for Pop and haven't come across any problems. In
#6, don't you mean to run the credtool on the IMail server not the proxy
server? Anyways, thanks for your time and input! Thanks also to everyone
else who offered their insight!

you'll need to do the following for credtool to work:
1. create a user (a simple domain user will do) with log on as service
rights and log on locally
2. set smtp to log on as this user on start-up...
3. use a wspcfg.ini that looks like this:

[SMTPD32]
 ServerBindTcpPorts=25
 Persistent=1
 KillOldSession=1
 ForceCredentials=1

4. delve into the registry and add this value:

Value: DependOnService
Type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Data: NtLmSssp

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPD32
(makes the service dependant on nlmsssp - don't ask!!)

5. go to winsock proxy service and give the user above unlimited access to
all protocols (being specific doesn't seem to work)
6. on the proxy issue the following command:
credtool -w -n smtpd32 -c [username] [domainname the user is in] [password]
where the user is the one you have created to earlier in step 1.
7. do the same for any other service you need (n.b i wouldn't try this with
pop though as you may find that no-one can log on to their pop3 accounts
anymore!) - thats why i would suggest not using access control on the
Winsock service but if you find a workaround for this please let me know...
8. Make sure you stop and start smtpd32 as the last thing u do...and you
should then be able to see the username you created appear for each service
you have 'hosted' in the 'current sessions' for the Winsock Proxy Service.

take a look at http://proxyfaq.networkgods.com/ which is a great resource
for ms proxy, you'll see the stuff on Imail there but i found you need to do
a little bit more then what's in the 'proxyfaq'...

Looking at the Winsock proxy logs, I think you may be right. I am using
wspcfg.ini and credtool and it appeared to be working. I could see the
authenticated user (from credtool) as a current user twice (1 pop, 1 smtp)
on the proxy. When IMail automatically tries to send, the Winsock log shows
the user as SYSTEM. I am logged onto the IMail server as the same user I set
credtool to use. I'm going to try credtool again and if that doesn't work I
will try your suggestion of turning off access control. At least then I will
know if it's authentication or not. It's still strange though, because SMTP
receives email immediately through the Proxy. Thanks for your input.

Marty,

If your Imail server is 'server hosted' behind MS Proxy 2.0 you will be
using the Winsock proxy client on the mail server, and a wspcfg.ini file in
the \imail directory? If so the imail server should have no default gateway
in its tcp/ip settings, but should have DNS. I would make sure that access
control is turned off for the Winsock proxy service - because this is the
service that smtpd32.exe will use to remotely bind port 25 to the external
Ip of the Proxy serve...I am guessing that if your Imail server is server
hosted in this manner then the reason why you can send 'manually' is because
you are authenticated again the Winsock service as the user you are logged
onto the Imail machine as, but when 'automatic' mail transfer takes place
their is no authorised user to authenticate with the Winsock proxy service
therefore mail sending fails...There is a way of using credtool that comes
with ms p and some changes to the smtpd32.exe service so it starts as a user
with access rights on the Winsock proxy service, but this can get rather
complicated. Turn off Winsock proxy service access control, stop and start
the Winsock service and then stop and start the Imail stmp service and see
if this sorts it...

First off, thanks to everyone for their input. There is nothing in the
'Gateway' field and the 'Send all mail through gateway' is not checked. I
also have used telnet and nslookup with no problems. I thought it was a
setting on my proxy but that wouldn't explain why it works when I manually
send it.

Marty, Scott,

You are probably on the right road here Scott. The field '...Gateway' on the
SMTP settings might be read to mean your router (or at least soem people
have done this in the past), but in fact it is a 'mail gateway' or 'relay
server' that IMail wants in this field.

So, Marty, if you thought 'router' and it has no SMTP service running on it,
then change that field to blank. Apply, then stop/start SMTP service.

Since you also are behind a proxy, you might be able to use the Proxies
address in that field. But the Proxy would have to be running its own SMTP
service and would be responsible for delivery and you might not want that.
And, there is a setting 'tries before sending to gateway', which defaults to
3. This means IMail will try 3 times (and fail) before it sends to the
gateway, unless you also have the checkbox enabled 'Send all remote mail
through gateway'.

Lastly, the usual reason that IMail cannot delivery external email, is DNS
related. If IMail cannot get the info it needs to make a connection, then
you might not see the typical 'connect' lines in the log. Make sure that
the computer running IMail can 'connect' to the outside world. I'd suggest
running telnet on port 25, to an external mail server (imail.ipswitch.com).
If you cannot connect using telnet program, then IMail cannot either. You
will need to resolve this and then IMail will work.

Once I changed it back, the E-mails would go out immediately again. I think
it had something to do with the remote gateways. You might want to check
the SMTP tab in the IMail Administrator and make sure everything there
appears O.K.
