<G> "It can not be an open relay" isn't easy to say.

If it lets you specify the *domains* you want allowed, you have an open
relay (the spammer just says he is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", or even
"make$[EMAIL PROTECTED]").

If it lets you specify the IP addresses, that's much better; but, that
doesn't work for a lot of people (if you are a business and have users on
the road, it won't work for them; if you are a "free web mail" business, it
won't work for you).

The *only* way for it to not be an open relay (and work for everyone) is to
restrict the IP addresses, *and* allow authentication for everyone that
won't come from the list of good IP addresses. But, in order to do that,
the virus scanner *must* be able to figure out a way of determining whether
or not a password is correct. In order to work for everyone, they would
have to support the NT database, the external databases that IMail supports,
and the IMail database.

This hassle is one of the other reasons we are working on Declude Virus
www.declude.com ), that will allow virus scanning without having to run an
open relay, prevent some viruses from roaming users from slipping through,
bugs in mail servers written by virus experts, etc.
