The reason we were told we needed to 'wipe and re-install' is because when
we tried running any of the updates, they errored out. Ipswitch said this
was because our install 'had issues', and we would have to do a new install.
It has taken management an entire year to finally say OK. And of course, we
are upgrading to MS Exchange early next year, so I get to redo our mail
server for about three months of use.

I was also under the impression that there was no good way to upgrade from
5.01 to 6.04. Is it possible? Does anyone know of issues with doing this?
Is it simple as running the 6.04 install? Does it need to reboot when it is
finished? Should I upgrade to 5.09 first?

Kory,

Whoever told you or your boss that you would have to 'wipe' IMail was WAY
off base! Yes, you do have to 'install', but IMail is good at that and will
not affect your settings or users. Takes just a few minutes. When I did
postmaster duties, I used to upgrade at lunch time and maybe, one or 2
people, would complain that they 'could not connect to the server'. I'd tell
them to 'try again', because by the time they complained, I was done! That
way, I did not have to come in early or stay late. If you announce
beforehand when you will do it, then the users will know to expect a short
outage.
