yes, odbc driver in the IIS/Imail box can connect of tcp/ip to SQL.

Pretty hard to users, and others, to get to anything on the private
network. That's the idea of "private", actually. So Imail needs to
be on the public/IIS box.

If you need to get to the Imail user base with other apps, then you
have to use an external db. Otherwise, use the Imail db.

Does the the SQL box have to be on the public network? Can you place
it as a "back end" on the private network with access only by the
Imail/IIS box? It's best to have as few boxes on public ip's as
possible. The question is then how YOU get to the SQL box for admin work.
