John,

Check out our EZSignUp utility, which is open-source ASP. We use the
adduser.exe utility for the actual account creation (instead of just
inserting a SQL record), so that the Alias and List names are checked
against. The code also provides a profanity word list and a reserved account
list for further filtering. Finally, a notification email gets sent to the
admin of the domain, and a welcome message gets sent to the new user,
thereby initializing the mailbox. Price is $69 at
http://hksi.net/products/#102; demo at http://killerwebmail.com (which runs
its backend on SQL7). It should save you several hours of development.

Hope this helps,
Ron
