I do have IMail setup to only accept smtp-requests by
certain IP-addresses and ranges.

No, it is all on my local LAN connected to the internet via
an ADSL-connection.

Neither is the case here. The thing is that I experience
this problem intermittently. As soon as I can't access the
mailbox from my laptop connected to the local LAN (and it is
the same mailbox every time) I can't send email. From the
server itself I can access everything just fine while this
is going on. After about 15 minutes the problem resolves
itself and everything works just fine. I have checked the
logs for irregularities during these episodes, but so far I
have come up empty.
