Hi Ben & Ipswitch,
We use a Web based IMAP client called Interchange so clearly not your
average configuration. This has always been pretty strict about IMAP
protocol settings, Outlook Express is usually a little more forgiving, in my
experience. OE 5.x seems to have got a bit stricter.
I have managed to reproduce the problem by sending from Outlook Express with
"Moore, Steven" as my display name. Interchange displays the message but it
only shows "\" as the Display name of the sender.
I believe that this is a problem when IMail interprets the message in the
mailbox. Outlook Express uses a \ character to deference the quotes when it
sends the email.
By going the IMail mail box we can see this is the message as IMail received
it (it will not have been modified)
So outlook forms the from address header entry like this:
From: "\"Moore, Steve\"" <me@domain>
When the mailbox is intepretted by IMail it sees the first quoted string "\"
and treats that as the display name therefore \ is the display name seen it
then ignores the rest until it gets to the email address in <>'s. It then
encodes this 1 character display correctly in IMAP message as
{1}
\
which is valid way of sending 1 \ character according to RFC 2060 (it's sent
as a literal rather than quoted string at this stage.
So basically this is either a problem that Outlook Express is using the \
character incorrectly to deference quotes, or that IMail IMAP service is
failing to interpret these dereferenced characters when it processes the
mailbox. I have no idea which is at fault, but our web based email client
doesn't send the quotes in a display name (which is why I have never seen
the problem)
Hope this is not too confusing.
