If you run a mail system with network drives, then your concern should also
be  performance, since network volumes are a lot slower than locals.

MS Networking, afaik, always runs on the NetBIOS API, either with NetBEUI
or tcp/ip transport.

Mapping netbios drives through a firewall sounds like raping the
firewall.  As you seem to appreciate, NetBIOS is extremely dangerous on a
public servers.
