Actually I've had that happen quite a few times. It's just become a fact of
life with our Imail server.
All I can say is that it seems to only happen when the user puts an large
load on the server such as purging a number of messages while changing to
another folder, etc. We use IMAP primarily.
Interestingly I've been able to get back most of the messages by looking in
that user's folder. Turn on the "details" view and look at the number of
copies of MAIN.???. You will see a MAIN.MBX (This is the mailbox) and you
may see a MAIN.POP3 plus you may see one other (MAIN.OMB - I think).
You'll notice that the POP3 and OMB files are huge -- that's because all of
their messages are in there. MAIN.MBX should be really small -- possibly 0
bytes.
Rename MAIN.MBX to MAIN.OLD and then rename MAIN.POP3 (or whatever) to
MAIN.MBX. I always pick the largest MAIN file with the most recent date.
I should point out that you'll want to do this AS SOON AS you notice the
problem. Otherwise mail will start accumulating in the "new" MAIN.MBX and
then you'll have to worry about getting that as well.
Once you've renamed the MAIN.POP3 (MAIN.OMB) to MAIN.MBX have the user log
back into their account and the mail should be back again.
Not sure this is the same thing but it sounds similar. Then again, they may
have just clicked DELETE ALL!
Hope this helps! Write me privately if this doesn't make sense.
