I'm in the same boat. Most of my spam comes in for users that are no longer
here. Those I just filter into Dev -> Null.

Here is the dilemma:

For mail to truly "bounce" it should be rejected immediately after the
sending server says the recipient addresses. Since the message is delivered
after that point you can either bounce the message or you can read it. You
can't have both.

Next best would be to accept the message (so you can read it and forward it
if needed) but then bounce it from your mail server. The problem with that
is that once it leaves the main server the true recipient is lost. If an
email arrives at the nobody account addressed to "[EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED]" you can not tell which one is the 'nobody'. The nobody
might even be in the bcc list! The ONLY way this can be done correctly is if
the server itself bounces it. I don't know of a single mail server that will
bounce and deliver nobody email is this way.

Third best would be to bounce the message with a bot or an autoresponder
saying "One of your recipients does not exists, but who knows which one it
is!". This just kinda sucks.

How do you guys handle this kind of mail? I have a nobody alias setup and
forward that to my email account but that just increases the amount of junk
mail that I have to go through on any given day. I do this so I can catch
any badly addressed mail that is really meant for a valid user. I manually
forward these messages to the user. It's a lot of work but makes for great
customer loyality.

Is there a better way to accomplish this same goal?

Thanks,
Evans Martin
