CDONTS, which is the older technology now, is extremely fast. In fact I
don't think I've seen anything faster for pure MTA. It will send 1000
messages out the door before you can see them in the pickup directory.
BUT - there are limitations to CDONTS. The chief of which is DNS
resolution, especially when a local domain can be confused with a remote
domain. Another problem is those AOL folks who so frequently forget to
add a domain name. In that case MS SMTP server thinks those are local
addresses and puts them in the local folder where of course they are
never picked up by anyone.
CDO is the newer technology. It uses the same MS SMTP engine but allows
for separate domains to have their own pickup, queue, and other
directories and it has a richer set of methods and properties for use
with ADO.
All same dns problems though.
I've felt that it really wants MS DNS server running but I'm not really
sure about it.
It works great by itself though with good DNS and it works great as a
gateway to either an IMAIL server or to some other MTA.

I tried using the CDONTS thing, but I could never get it to work. It's
probably just MS Propaganda, but I thought all of the Microsoft
documentation states that you need an Exchange server to use the "Remote
Gateway" option. But, again, I could never get it to work. That's why
we
choose the ASPEmail.
