In my opinion Scott has nothing to worry about in this one... We used Symantec's antivirus (their gateway product) prior to installing declude.... and while it has a nice little gui and a few features I would like to see in declude, it was not effective. It missed many viruses in particular the sircam virus as it apparently did not have the proper format in the header(this was the best story I could get from Symantec at the time... over 2 months after the virus should have been detected and stopped.. like they were blaming it on the virus)... The day after installing Declude we captured an additional 200 viruses being sent from our system (had it down to less than 2 a day on average prior to switching)... In addition Symantec likes to charge a "forever" type fee based on the number of users in their new products so you can't just pay for the product and enjoy it after that, you continue to pay. Where with declude I can use whatever scanning engine I choose and pay nowhere near what Symantec wants because I have a choice. Also we had problems with the Symantec problem locking up and causing other problems.. although they were minor.. I have never had a problem with Declude antivirus or spam filter..
So as one that has used both Symantec and declude, take it from me and go with declude. I think we should all stand up for Scott in his fight against this new gorilla. It's not that I resent Ipswitch for forging partnerships (God knows, they may need them to stay afloat), but what they're going to do is make virus protection appear inaccessible to budget-conscious companies--because of Symantec's stature and marketing prowess, many may think it's Imail Anti-Virus or nothing, and choose nothing. So let's all who are pleased with Declude, and especially its support, make an extra effort to head off people at the pass who are leaning toward this new package. I could understand if they were the only presence in this market and were taking advantage of that to gauge customers (not ethical, but at least straightforward)...but here it seems like the sort of complex price-and-presence warfare that Microsoft lives on.
