Just about any mail server can be used as a backup. The problem really is how you deliver mail from the backup to the final destination. As you suggest ETRN is a command that can accomplish this task.
I am not familiar with MailMax. But IMAIL certainly can be used as backup mail server on Windows 2000. You only require a minimum version and it works elegantly. See the IMAIL knowledge base articles for setting up backup mail server in any case for detailed instructions. Generally you have to: 1) edit your dns settings (eg, mx1 - 5, mx2 - 10) 2) edit your Allow IP list on the backup server for the primary and vice versa 3) edit your hosts file on backup server so that the domain being baked up routes to the primary I think it is this ability to manipulate the host file that makes imail such a nice product to use as a backup. When the primary comes back online then the IMAIL secondary sends the queued mail to the primary using the route in the host file. The maximum delay is the q timer. You can also force ETRN. You do want a fairly long try time for a backup server but that is true regardless of the mail server. You can also use Microsoft SMTP server. See q256655 and q252148 in the Microsoft KB. You set it up to accept mail for each domain you want to backup. The first article refers to the way in which you'd set the primary server to trigger an ETRN. The 2nd article is how you'd do it by telnet. As far as I know there is not a way to make an IMAIL primary automatically trigger etrn. However, there are 3rd party utilities such as swinc's dequeu http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_dq.htm that you may be able to configure.
