The  problem  I was illustrating with this is that any mail that stays
on  the  Exchange box, including meeting invitations, etc. will not be
on the Imail box at any time.

Len  and  I  agree  (after  a fashion) that your best bet is to find a
standalone  webmail  product  that  can  penetrate  the  firewall  for
POP3/IMAP4 and SMTP only. You can still use your Imail investment as a
store-and-forward backup server, which is never a bad idea (and which,
ironically,  is  the  title  of  this thread). Look at HORDE/IMP (free
*nix),  EmuMail (cheap Win32), WorldClient (deprecated Win32, now part
of MDaemon), and whatever else Len recommends.

P.S. What is it that your boss doesn't like about OWA, anyway? I mean,
I  don't  run  Exchange, so it's not my pref, but it's got some mighty
cool  DHTML and it keeps you on one box. Is he just running you ragged
for his evil pleasure?
