Hello again,
please find enclosed our answers to your questions (I repeated them):
1) What does CPU utilization look like when you run the ARCserve job?
-> Very low
2) Have you made sure that ARCserve is not contending for any files
with Imail, i.e. are you excluding all of the Imail executables and DLLs that
may be in use?
-> We do a backup only of datafiles not lying in any windows-dll-
or imail-dll-directories.
3) Tried running Imail on a different port?
-> We didn't yet. I will probably come back with the results later.
4) Tried running something else on 8484 to see if it also is vulnerable?
-> We didn't yet. I will probably come back with the results later.
Wer will do it on 8383.
5) Run a 'netstat -a' with Web Messaging stopped and ARCserve running
to see if anything else (outgoing, maybe?) is binding to TCP 8484?
-> The webgateway runs under 8383 port as the default port. But there
wasn't anything else running under the same port as we ran a
'netstat-a'.
6) Run NTBACKUP as a test to see if tape drive access itself causes
the problem, meaning that you may have a controller problem?
-> Couldn't really fully do this, since NT-Backup has problems with open
SQL-Dat-Files.
7) Run an ARCserve Copy job, rather than an backup, to take the tape
drive interface out of the picture?
-> Our admin swears, the drive should be o.k. as it is running fine
every day. The copy-job runs fine as well.
Somebody else mentioned he saw the machine hanging a while ago, as
arcserve didn't run/backup the drives. So for me now it looks like it
is more a possible Arcserve-NT-service problem together with the Imail messaging
service causing this.
So we have to investigate further testing via starting stopping some
additional arcserve services (there a three altogether). The other problem we
faced was, we can't test it completely cause everytime we test it and
it runs to this frezzing problem, the disk array is completely
reorganizing after rebooting and this takes a very looooooooooong time.
Sandford, any further hints now again ?
Thanks Uwe

Hi Sandy, it seems that these tips are of high value for us.
Port-changing and excluding the IMails dlls looks like a good way to
investigate further.
We will evaluate these tips and I will come back with the results.
Thank you.
Uwe
