It seems to me that encrypting the password sent in an IMAP login is an unsilly application. I use stunnel with Imail IMAP to provide IMAPS. It works for me, but I have no idea how it would perform under load as I'm the only IMAP(S) user on my mail server. Note that stunnel doesn't need to run on the same machine as Imail, it can redirect to a port on a different machine. As long as the stunnel machine has no public network between it and the Imail server then the security improvements would be mostly retained.
