>Some users are currently receiving multiple instances of the same message.

Are they receiving multiple copies of the same message at the same time
(they connect and get several copies of each message), or are they
receiving multiple copies of the same message at different times (they
connect and get one copy, and tomorrow they get another copy of the same
E-mail)?

The former could occur if their mail client is set up to check their POP3
account too often (which can cause 2 POP3 sessions to occur at the same
time). The later could occur if they keep their mail on the server, and
their (or IMail's) IDs got corrupted.
