worked out many, many problems

Depending on how you want to use it Microsoft's SMTP server is
hard to beat. It is very fast and free. But if you want to try
and use it for users sending directly via smtp then the
authentication becomes an issue. But it can serve as a gateway to
imail.
There are any number of other servers but it is so hard to know
performance without actually using them.
