I once saw something very similar to this. I don't recall the exact
errors, but whenever transferring a bunch of files, it would always
fail. Another symptom was that when going to web sites, a lot of the
graphics wouldn't show up; also, transferring binary FTP files would rarely
work (whereas transferring text files would). In this case, it turned out
to be a bad LAN card that would *sometimes* change a single bit within the
packets that were transferred (just in some odd cases, such as if the 38th
through 41st bits were "1101", it would change the next bit to 1). So it
might be worth checking the LAN cards.
