I had encountered a similar problem a while back. While I could not identify the specific cause I found that it was resolved when I changed the DNS Server used by IMail to a DNS server closer to the backbone.Don't those messages indicate, mostly, tcp/ip session breakage?
If DNS were really the problem (Imail not getting A records back to connect to), then the sessions would have never been established in the first place.
