I have a question about MX records. I am installing NAV Gateway SMTP
security. IT says in order for the mail to pass through it and then to the
imail server, that I must place an MX record above it in the DNS zone file.
For example:

10 machine_name.doman.com
20 imail_server.domain.com
NO!!! If you do that, viruses can be delivered to your mailserver unscanned!

You want to have just "10 machine_name.doman.com", unless you want viruses.

However, there is no MX record for the mail server and the e-mail has been
working fine since as long as I can remember. What am I doing wrong here?
You need at least one MX record for the domain ("example.com"). You can get by without one, since mailservers are required to send to the A record if an MX record does not exist. But, you are expected to have the MX record, and it can't hurt to have it (and a few non-RFC-compliant mailservers and mail tools won't work properly).

It's OK to have MX records for a domain that do not point to your IMail server, *if* the server(s) that are listed in the MX record(s) point to servers that forward mail to your IMail server.
