0 is a perfectly valid preference value for an MX record, and I haven't (until today) heard of the possibility of any mailservers dropping it.Kind of waiting for Len to jump in here, but I am not sure if 0 as a MX record is something that is recommended to have.
Although I personally wouldn't recommend using 0, that's probably just habit from back in the old days when writing code in BASIC where you had line numbers, and couldn't easily add a new line if there wasn't room (IE if the first line was line #0, you wouldn't be able to add any lines before it). But, with MX records, that isn't an issue -- at the most, you should have a maximum of about 10 MX records, so changing the preference isn't difficult if needed.
