Another important aspect is that several common viruses (Klez, Sircam, etc.) will attach potentially confidential files to the virus. If the virus were to be cleaned, the confidential document would be spread, potentially causing more damage.
What about quarantine?
That's what we recommend for our customers.
Typically, mailserver AV can handle up to about 100,000 E-mails/day. That depends on a number of factors, of course (CPU, other programs running, current CPU load), but for most IMail users, it works fine doing the AV scanning on the IMail server (whether it be with our Declude Virus, IMail AntiVirus, or another program). Why put the load of virus scanning on the same box all your pop3 and webmail traffic is going to be on? On servers with lots of traffic this would not be good.
For people doing higher volumes, or have other reasons for not running AV on the primary mailserver, a gateway is a good idea (whether it is *nix, IMail, or something else).
