You are going through what we went through a couple of years ago. Hang on. Tell them 
to upgrade their old junk.
 
"Not a gateway" is just a generic error message that Imail pops-up when Outlook cannot 
relay mail because it is not authenticating.

        Thanks,  this  did  not  work...  I  have  users  who  are having many
        problems.  I  also have more Outlook 97 users than I expected who have
        to  upgrade  as  SMTP  AUTH is not in Outlook 97. I have so many angry
        users  right  now  I  might  have  to back out of this. I made sure my
        BlackIce firewall is not messing with ports 25 or 110. I have 'Disable
        SMTP Reporting' unchecked. I am using 'Relay for Addresses'. What am I
        doing wrong?
        
        Very  often when testing I am getting an error that the senders domain
        is  'not  a gateway'. This is very strange. My address when sending is
        on  the local server. Why would it say the destination domain is not a
        gateway  then  block  the  mail  sending?  This  is  also happening to
        properly configured Pegasus errors:
