I concur, stopping/starting SMTP clears its brains and SMTP AUTH starts working
correctly again.

The mail client hangs because the separate Imail process that should, at
this point, return the key to the SMTP client, never activates.
Start/stop Imail SMTP process and SMTP AUTH will work again ( until it
halts again). There is no known cause or fix for this ancient, very
erratic problem, afaik.
