The  restarting  of  SMTP  does  not  fix anything.
that's a different situation from the past. With Imail hung at that point, start/stop STMP always got SMTP AUTH running again. It was a pain, but it worked.


 Maybe the 'bug' of
hanging  is  pronounced  on  a  much  faster server...??? SMTP AUTH is
virtually  unusable  here. I get the same results even if I unload the
firewall  completely.
it's not the firewall, the Imail and Eudora logging that SMTP dialog is working ok up to the point when Imail recieves the AUTH command and never responds.

 Not sure at all what to do next. I have reviewed
all  my  SMTP  settings  against  the  Ipswitch  Knowledgebase and see
nothing out of the ordinary.
yep, there are NO knobs for SMTP AUTH. it's alwasy on (even when it's not announced in the "extended SMTP services" list.
