I run my IMail server with a very high number (240 with a 30 minute Queue Timer) of attempts before returning mail to the sender. This is done to allow for extended outages at servers that I provide mail relay services for. I also provide mail forwarding services for some of these clients and, in the case of a problem with outgoing mail, relayed through my server, it can sit in the queue for 5 days before being returned as undeliverable.
In order to keep these messages from sitting for that time and also clogging up the server I try to clean them out daily. The technique is to change the value of the "T" parameter in the "Q" record to the maximum of 240 which forces a return after the next failed attempt. The only problem with this approach is that it give the sender a massage that the e-mail has been retried 240 times.
