Thanks for the info. I'm still somewhat confused though. Reading your reply it sounds like it doesn't matter what the host name is?
It depends on the version of IMail that you are running.
With some versions, the "Reply-To:" address in web messaging will default to the Official Host Name of the IMail server (in which case "example.com" is better than "mail.example.com"). In recent versions, the OHN will be used in web messaging URLs, in which case you would have to use "mail.example.com" (unless the A record for example.com pointed to the mailserver, which is rare).
I'm not aware of any other uses for the Official Host Name within IMail, although there could be.
You said bubba.xyz.com or mail.xyz.com are both fine. Still, I can't help but wonder if it does matter. It seems like one should be the "correct" setup. Machinename.domain.com is different from mail.domain.com
It depends 100% on the context. What is "Machinename.domain.com" and "mail.domain.com"? I'm guessing you have DNS of:
domain.com. A mail.domain.com
Machinename.domain.com. A 192.0.2.25
mail.domain.com. A 192.0.2.25In this case, "Machinename.domain.com" and "mail.domain.com" would work identically for the IMail OHN. The only benefit would be whatever benefit you had in having 2 names for the same server (IE you may be planning to split them into 2 servers later).
The first uses the network machine name as part of the name. The second option is just any domain of 100 domains that I serve mail for. I just pick one domain to be the official host name? It seems like there has to be more to it then that.
You can just pick one. However, in many cases the answer is pretty clear -- for example, Joe's Web Hosting would likely choose "mail.joes_web_hosting.com" as their Official Host name (rather than "mail.one_of_our_clients.com").
