it seems to usually two of my users.  I do open a telnet to the smtp port to
make sure the remote server is available, but I thought the problem was with
my iMail server, as it is the one acting as if my user didn't exist properly
on our own server?  am i misunderstanding the error message?  I'v copied a
piece of the log file below.

What you really need to do is track which recipient addresses/domains are
generating the 553, if indeed there is a trend.  Have you tested
interactively on the remote server to see if the addresses are reachable?
