- When processor utilization goes to 100%, the primary culprit is SMTPD (10% to 40%)
SMTPD isn't really the primarily here -- if it is staying close to 40% CPU usage, that might indicate a problem. But the real problem is:
and between 10 and 20 SMTP processes (each between 0% and 20%).
It is normal at times to have 10-20 SMTP processes in memory. However, it shouldn't be normal for them to cause 100% CPU usage.
The 100% processor is most often triggered by a 120 user mailing list that receives about 50 posts per day.
Do you have the "Number of recipients per message" for that list set up well (IMail's formula would result in 5, but in your case 20 might result in better performance)?
With this information, I would have to go with the hardware issue theory. I can't see how 10-20 SMTP32.exe processes would cause 100% CPU usage without some other factor involved.
You may have to start dealing with the Performance Monitor to try to track down this problem. We have two lists with hundreds of users on them, that on some days may receive close to the 50 posts you tend to have. Although our processor does often hit 100% CPU usage, it has a very slow processor, and we push the server hard (intentionally receiving dictionary attacks, doing virus scanning, custom programs running, etc.). You shouldn't be seeing sustained 100% CPU usage under normal conditions.
