Hi Mark, I had this problem a while ago as well. The IMail Monitor would open too many connections and, due to the timeouts, they would remain open for quite some time. The server would get to the point where it would no longer accept new connections, including incoming SMTP email or POP/HTTP requests. The only solution was to reboot.
I highly recommend not using IMail Monitor in a fasion where it pings the server or connects to ports to test services. You could either reduce how often the monitor is checking the services (so that old TCP connections eventually get dropped), or consider using another monitoring package. While I am a big fan of NetSaint for UNIX, there are several freeware packages out there.
