Ives, Thanks for the feedback, I think the idea of extending the checking time intervals makes absolute sense.
Since my first post I have discovered, via the Ipswitch Knowledgebase, that there is a conflict when using Microsofts IIS service as it tries to open the same port. This happened because I made the grave error of trying Microsoft's free ftp package before coming to my senses and buying WS_FTP Server from Ipswitch. Of course like all good know all and impatient IT managers I completely neglected to uninstall the MS product. It may be coincidence, but since the removal of IIS I have not seen the problem. (having said this of course it will probably crash tomorrow). Thanks for all the help from this forum, I am impressed by the calmness and restrained responses to some of the questions raised...it is good to see professionals not putting down newbies.
