Almost all of our users are outside of our system. If I set it to no Relay
instead of relay for local host it will cause a lot of angry customers.

So you would rather have happy customers and offer free E-mail to spammers, who will use it to the point that it crashes your server, and causes your server to hang?

Lots of people have gone through the process of converting their customers to use SMTP AUTH. It's not easy, but can be done. I think they will be happier with reliable mail service.

What I don't understand is why I suddenly have problems sending to mailservers
that I always send to. Is it because the tcp/ip cannot handel the request?

You're offering free E-mail service to spammers. You get what they pay for. :)

If I'm set to relay for local host how am I an open relay?

Because you are saying "We are using the honor system -- anyone who claims they are a customer of ours can send mail through our server." A spammer will happily claim to be a customer of yours (by using a return address on your domain) in order to send their E-mail for free through your server.
