I have a local provider who says one of may mail servers is responding without a canonical name?
He is saying it only shows the machine name. I did setup reverse dns and it shows the name correctly. Do I need to do this somewhere else?
As others have pointed out, we can only make guesses without more information.
However, my bet is that the problem is that your mailserver is identifying itself improperly with HELO/EHLO (as "some_made_up_host.example.com" instead of "mail.example.com", for example).
It's also possible that the mailserver is identifying itself improperly in the SMTP greeting (when you first connect to it on port 25), or that the reverse DNS isn't set up properly. But without knowing the IP of the mailserver, we can't test those.
