Also, we use cold fusion to generate the mail and write emails into spool - the server does become loaded when trying to write these emails into the spool at that point
so you're not using Imail list server, finally we learn a key point.
I expect Imail will prefer receiving mails to sending queued mail, so your dose of 7000 unique msgs (not 1 msg to 7000 addresses, or what?) is going to hog the Imail throughput until all is delivered to Imail.
If you have one unique msg to send to 7000 addresses, then have CF send 100 RCPT TO: per SMTP session, rather than one.
- am trying pinpoint whether its Imail or other applications which causes this slowdown in sending of emails.
There are 2 phases: delivery to Imail. How long is that taking?
then, delivery from Imail to Internet. That's where the Imail queue processing is going to hurt if it decides to screw up.
You must keep your Imail spool/ directory clean of stale files, and that filesystem partition must be continually defragged to enable fastest disk i/o.
Does anyone use CF or any other webscripting to generate mail and Imail to send out - anyone know of problems with using this combination?
Lots of people have done that for years. The CFMAIL tag has always sucked, don't know if MM has fixed it. that's why the CF lib had so many 3rd party CRMAIL replacements.
