Another problem with it is that if you put the test for invalid tags
on, you find loads are found because of people using HTML emails with
outlook, there are loads of weird office related tags which aren't
real HTML tags, so this test is basically useless.

That's why we didn't add a similar test to Declude JunkMail -- HTML was designed specifically so that unknown tags would be ignored, so that it would be extensible. There are likely lots of proprietary tags out there, as well as new ones that aren't well known yet.


I don't think that the comments test will look for fake tags as well,
I see a lot of Via<X>gra and Via<!X>gra type code that gets through.

Declude JunkMail handles this by stripping out HTML tags, so that your two examples would get caught.


Note that some spammers also use things like "Via<B></B>gra", which can't be detected with a "fake tags" test, and requires stripping out the HTML tags before running the filter.
