What is reasonable for max mail size and mailbox size?

depends on your policies and email services, and the profile of how your users operate.

POP access empties mailboxes usually, so smaller mailboxes are ok. The ratio of max msg:max mbx is closer to 1.

but webmail and imap access encourage users to (ab)use their mailbox as a long-time msg archive (and gets you into the very different, non-mail business of "frequent archive backup and rapid restore on demand" of perhaps 10's of GB per operation. also, with the mbx partition have bigger mbx files, fragging and defragging is more intensive. The ratio of max msg:max mbx is usually much smaller than for pop.
