We wrote a custom application for a customer that allows them to easily send
us jobs. The application runs on their workstations, and when it submits
the job to us, it sends two email messages through our Imail SMTP service.
The problem is, neither message gets delivered (one is supposed to go to us,
and the other goes to the customer).

Have you checked the IMail SMTP log file to see what happened?

I suspect it has something to do with the relay options for SMTP. I set it
to "Relay for local hosts", and created the "accept.txt" file and placed it
in the top directory for Imail.

FYI, "Relay for local hosts" means "Relay for spammers and local hosts".

IMail's SMTP Security options have a number of relaying choices. Of them, only 2 can be used safely (the rest cause you to be an open relay). The two safe options are "Relay for Addresses" and "No Mail Relay".

If you use IMail's "Relay for addresses", you would enter a list of "safe" IP addresses that your users may come from; anyone not coming from those safe IPs would need to use SMTP AUTH. If you use "No mail relay", everyone must use SMTP AUTH to relay mail. Note that relay settings apply only to outgoing E-mail, so no matter what your settings are, your users will still be able to get mail.
