My question: Is there a simple way for me to implement effective spam filtering on my system ? I bought iMail because I need a reliable system which doesn't require a lot of tweaking - and now I need the same thing from the spam filtering system. I don't understand how to configure it so that I maximize it's effectiveness.

Also - I know about Declude for antivirus, but it seems pretty pricey. Is there anything out there that is simple, and a bit more affordable ?

Well, for Declude has certainly been worth every penny. However, if you set up iMail rules to block executable file attachments (there's a technote explaining how in the IPSwitch knowledge base), you'll block a very high percentage of e-mail borne viruii now.

For spam filtering judicious selection of DNS based blacklists is a big help. Review the spams that get through, using http://www.dmnsstuff.com to get the details about the owner of the IP address, etc. Judicious additions to the KILL.LST file and the access control list for the SMTP service can also weed out a lot of unwanted mail.

Finally, don't forget anti-spam at the client side. I'm told the Mozilla filters work pretty well, though I've not used them much.
