I ran into a similar problem when I fired up IMail about a month ago for the first time. I was running a NetGear GA302T NIC card that I had just installed to plug into our new Gigabit hub.
The system would run fine for hours and then it would just stop communicating on the NIC card. Couldn't repair the connection, nada. I was running the latest drivers from Netgear on it. I had to reboot to get the NIC card back online each time it locked up on me. After a couple of bouts with this, I pulled the fancy new card and went back to an old tried and true Intel 100S nic card and haven't had any trouble since.
