The gateway was the better option for me because it receives mail for 128 domains, and relays to around 70 servers, only one (mine) is under my control, and is running Imail. My Imail server is handling 88 virtual domains. Others are running anything from Sendmail, Exchange, Lotus, or whatever. With this set up the gateway is running at around 0.07 CPU utilization and is handling around 90K-150k messages per day. The Imail server, (and the client's servers handle all the POP3, SMTP, and webmail chores. I know this is not the same as everyone else, and is not heavily loaded, but it is working for me without a hitch. Very tiny number of false positives (quickly remedied manually) and none of the new virus/worm variations have gotten through.
