Yup...that's exactly what we're doing.  No sense in duplicating accounts if we don't have to.  But I WISH it would run on a member server AND take advantage of the AD accounts.  Many other apps can do this as long as you tell them to look at the domain instead of the local database.  Why can't IMail?  Then the mail server wouldn't have the added load of AD, replication, authenticating windows users, etc, to deal with.

Not  true. In fact, installing on a DC allows you to take advantage of
IMail's AD userbase integration.
