Chris:

Almost every mail client has to be specifically configured for SMTP
configuration - Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.  We have required it for 4
years and still get calls when people mess up their settings.  I would
suggest that you do some searches on smtp authentication for the different
mail clients and put together a quick tech support document for your
clients.
