First of all: there is no reason to have local virtual hosts listed in
HOSTS. IMail already knows they're local.

Well, that would help in part, since mail destined for off-site
servers would not need to hit the mailbox server. But that's not
enough. If you want to drop mail for invalid addresses at the backup
MX, you can either (a) create a virtual host on the backup with
aliases for each [EMAIL PROTECTED] redirecting each to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], or (b) use MS SMTP with VamSoft's ORF
and periodically load in a text file containing the userbase.

Spammers now explicitly target backup MXs on the assumption (in your
case incorrect, thanks to Declude, but in many cases correct) that
anti-spam checks will be hampered. Spamware doesn't care about the MX
algorithm.
