While Imail obviously CAN be used in that setup, doesn't it seem a little like overkill? Our Imail server here doesn't relay a large volume of mail, but at a previous company that I worked, we for found that Imail runs relatively inefficiently at high SMTP traffic conditions. No doubt because it isn't designed to be a dedicated SMTP server!
A single IMail server can typically handle X00,000 E-mails/day (where "X" depends on the server, how well designed it is, what other functions are being used, etc.). A well designed server can handle close to 1,000,000 E-mails/day complete with spam/virus scanning.
Furthermore, if the only set of features that are being used are the SMTP and traffic filtering rules, doesn't this mean that you're paying way over the odds for services that are available for far less TCO, because they're bundled in with a whole bunch of features that aren't being used?
There are actually a lot of people with Exchange that are looking hard for Windows-based solutions (quite a few of our Declude JunkMail customers are running Exchange, and purchased IMail just so that they could use Declude JunkMail; some with Declude Virus, as well).
I would think that in David's scenario, I wouldn't use Imail - I'd use Postfix with SpamAssasin?
That would work fine, too. The problem, though, is that a lot of companies don't want to go to Unix and/or open source products, figuring (sometimes correctly, sometimes not) that the learning curve and support costs would be higher with open source.
