SmarterMail in fact uses XML files as a repository for its user
database.

I admin several installations of iMail, SmarterMail, and MailEnable.
The only reason why I remain with iMail is because of the superior
functionality Declude offers in spam and a/v management.

I feel that SmarterMail is a superiour product to MailEnable, but I have
not yet admin'd a SM installation that's high usage. I have worked on
several MailEnable instsallations that are high volume (20,000 mail
boxes, over 200,000 messages a day) and there have been a number of
stability issues. Their MTA, SMTP and Post Office Connector services
will randomly crash and cause a queue backup because of a malformed
message in the queue. With no easy way to ID the offending message in
the queue, the only solution is to zap the entire queue. Additionally,
the logging on MailEnable leaves a bit to be desired, as they log
information for each service to 3 different logs and all of them contain
slightly different information, but non contain the entire picture of
what's going on. MailEnable is developed in the AU causing lag times in
email / web based support, and making phone support pratically an
impossability.

On the other hand, SmarterTools is based in the good ol USA, they have
very responsive support (I would even say superb). They have sat on the
phone with me tracking down weird-o issues (which ultimately turned out
to be a bug in their product) and then proceeded to fix the bug and send
me a special build the same day. Try getting that level of support from
ipSwitch. SmarterMail also offers a completely web based admin, meaning
that you can remotely manage everything with ease from anywhere you are.
They also have Perfmon counters that you can use to diagnose problems
and use for performance testing. The builtin SmarterMail reporting
tools are also quite superior to anything MailEnable offers. You can
easily create reports for any period of time for which logs exist that
break down usage by bandwidth, messages sent and received per domain.

Additionally, as I mentioned previously, if you purchase SmarterMail
through a reseller you can typically get close to 50% off list.

Has anyone used SmarterMail ? It does not use a database so does that
mean it is using the registry? How solid is it? I am seeing reviews
and
reports on how solid MailEnable, and a couple others are, how about any
reviews from actual users on SmarterMail ?

I'm quite sure they did expect this kind of response from the active
list
users. We tend to solve our own problems without using their support and
don't pull any punches when telling others that it's weak to begin with.
I
don't think the IM nor the AntiVirus sold very well on their own so they
had
to bundle it to force a sale. Good luck with that.

I think this will be a fabulous example of one company growing too big
for
its clients while smaller more innovative companies sweep their clients.
Imail did it a few years ago to Post.Office.

The SmarterMail webmail is worth the cost of the Enterprise license
alone.

>Like I said, IPSwitch better start doing some damage control.

I think the fact that they have not after 250+ negative posts and
virtually
no positive posts speaks for itself.

If they weren't expecting this, they would have done damage control
already
-- Roger Greene (president of Ipswitch; [EMAIL PROTECTED]), William
Pollack (COO, [EMAIL PROTECTED]), Patrick Loring (Business
Development
Manager, [EMAIL PROTECTED]), Jill Jones (Messaging Product Manager,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]), and/or John Junod (co-owner with Roger Greene)
have
had plenty of time to post something. But all except Jill have been
silent, and Jill's posts are not for damage control.

So I think it is safe to say that Ipswitch made the decision to do this,
knowing that they would abandon 90% of their customers, and are sticking
by
that decision.
