We bought a bunch of these units: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00009Q97F/qid=1104441133/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl23/102-1506490-6107301?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846
from Costco for $99. They've run 30+ minutes in a power outage without flinching. I'd be concerned hooking up 4-6 machines on one... wouldn't the draw be too much for it? And what kind of consistent heat would that generate on it?
I'm also looking into a generator. Would love to be in that situation - looking at a new building with natural gas in the street that we could have "unlimited" power if needed.
Anyone take a guess at, say, 60 Dell mid-towers, 300-400 watts, plus a half dozen heavy duty PowerEdge / Powervaults running at say 500 watts?
ALSO, not to promote them, but I just bought 15 of them... Dell PowerEdges - 2.53 celeron, 512MB, 80GB, etc., $230 each (hence the need for KVMs).
Yeah, celerons, whatever. A 2.53 celeron still kicks *** against what I was using 12 months ago....
Thanks

I have 6 mini-towers on an 8-outlet remote power device, all on a $120 Belkin UPS. Works a charm.

PS: The 15KW generator with the 1-week supply of Propane means the UPS need only last 30-90 seconds. It does<g>.

Sorry to go OT here, but with so many other hosts/ISPs you guys probably know this better than anyone and have dealt with it already....
We're adding about a dozen machines and want to start using KVM/IP and equip these guys with remote reboot capabilities.
I've seen KVM/IP boxes - eBay and everywhere else. What I'm not clear on is the module (there must be one) that attaches to each server so the cat5 can connect. What do those go for? Do they make the whole proposition too expensive? Any good values out there? Don't need "top quality" - most of the boxes just run in the dark. But when we need to access, we want to access and don't want the boxes to "not boot" because there is no KVM attached to the connectors.
Second, we've about given up on a reasonably priced reboot solution. Yes, APC has managed powerswitches, but for us, we UPS each machine so "pulling the plug" on one outlet (how the powerswitches reboot a machine) is pointless because the UPS between the powerstrip and the PC keep it up. I guess we could do one UPS followed by the powerstrip followed by the servers, but what kind of UPS would you need to keep 8 mini-tower Dell Poweredges (300 or 400w PS) up and running? Again, does that go over the top in cost?
Doesn't anyone make a PCI card with a network connection where you can send a "magic packet" and tell that PCI card to do a hard reboot of the PC?
Thanks in advance
Chris
