I observed the same behavior on my private PC with Grisofts AVG
Personal Mail viruscanner enabled.
This "transparent" virus scaner service seems to filter the smtp auth
in any kind.
I have no SMTP-Auth lines in the logfile. Disableing the personal mail
scanner and using a MTA-Plugin (I use TheBat) resolves the problem.
Mail is getting trough the server with smtp-auth. There is no need to
change any configuration in my mail program, but I only disabled the
personal mal scanner. This is an reproducible error.

Maybe you have something similar?

It seems that this is some kind of a new bug, which came with an update,
because until the 13 January I had no problem!
