I agree - leaving the host name blank doesn't work, not at the top
level anyhow - I found a method that does work, in Win2k DNS:

* Right-Click on the domain that you want to add a wildcard to
 - choose to add a "New Domain..."
 - Type * as the new domain name
* You'll now have a new (sub)domain underneath the domain zone, that looks
like a folder named *
 - Right-Click on the * folder, and choose "New Host..."
 - Leave the Name blank, and put in the IP address that you want the
 wildcard to resolve to - you'll get an error that (same as parent
 folder) is not valid - you can just say yes to this and it should
 work now.

The end result is a record added to the .dns zone file that looks
like:

*    A  yourdomain.com
